Grading for ERS 390

The two parts of the 390 course will receive separate grades. Each of 390A (FALL TERM) and 390B will be worth 0.5 credit. The course coordinator and your supervisor will jointly assign the grade for the 390A (FALL TERM) part of the course.

   Contract. 5% Due Sept. 19.

An agreement, signed by student and supervisor (advisor), stating the title of the project, the nature of the final product, and the anticipated schedule of meetings. The contract is our mechanism for keeping track of who is working with whom, and who is responsible for reporting the final grade. HAND IN TO JAMES KAY

Project Statement. 10% Due Oct. 3.

A two-page, double-spaced, statement of the what and why of the project. A project statement gives the purpose and objectives of the project, and indicates its significance (why it's worth doing) in terms of what is known and/or the opportunity. Typically, the problem statement becomes the introductory material of a full proposal. THREE COPIES TO BE HANDED INTO JAMES KAY, OR POST ON THE WWW

   Background. 15% Due 21 Oct.

All projects should be set into context of what is already known or has already been done by others. A proposal therefore needs an extensive bibliography and literature review. For this exercise, report on all the information obtained; identify sources for information not obtained but required; and provide an annotated bibliography of minimum of five items that pertain to your project. These may provide "theoretical" knowledge, methodology, comparable results, or other information that will help set your work in context. Items referenced may be books, journal articles, Web pages, or other authoritative sources. It is important for students to meet with their advisors and identify the relevant information needs if this has not already been done.

First draft of proposal. 5% Due Nov. 10

The draft sets forth the problem statement, provides rationale, discusses methodology and proposed schedule of work, and is well-referenced. It tells the reader the what, why, how, who, and when of the project. THREE COPIES TO BE HANDED INTO JAMES KAY, ONE TO SUPERVISOR; OR POST ON THE WWW (A Sample Table Of Contents)

Final proposal. 45% Due 2 December.

This is the final copy of your proposal, revised in light of comments you have received from your peers, your advisor, and the course instructor. The proposal will be evaluated both for content (much of which has already been developed) and for form (a "professional" appearance is expected).    Participation 20%

In 390A involves being in lecture-workshops, being prepared, and being as helpful to others as you can. Your participation mark will reflect this and the quality of your presentations, both of your own work and the written and verbal feedback you provide for your peers.

Late Penalties: A penalty of 5 marks on the course grade will be assessed for each day late.
