Major Group Project

Purpose: Based on an analysis of the four cities (Rome, Mexico City, KW (TO), and Atlanta) suggest strategies for the thermal management (heating and/or cooling as is appropriate) of our cities. Support your suggested strategies with evidence form the data.

Tasks:

Characterize the temperature "fabric" for each city.

For the satellite data use a single thermal channel to map temperature.
For the Atlanta data use both a single channel mapping of temperature and an emissivity corrected mapping of temperature. If you did not correct for emissivity would that significantly alter your results ?

Use NDVI to characterize each city

Questions:

Identify, justify, discuss, and prioritize three to five improvements that could be made to the process of thermal management of our cities. (i.e. the activity of collecting thermal data, analysing it (including thermal energy balance and uncertainty considerations) and using the information to implement changes in our cities.)

Each team will generate and answer one detailed question about thermal management of cities. The question should be submitted to J. Luvall by e-mail (jluvall@uwaterloo.ca) by 10 March.

Example questions:
