In 1992, the Huron Working Group began as a systems ecology study group headed by Dr. James Kay, Faculty of Environmental Studies, University of Waterloo. Specific topics of interest included ecosystem theory, ecosystem integrity, and long term ecosystem monitoring. There was also an interest in municipal environmental protection.

Huron Park, located within the city of Kitchener (Ontario, Canada), was brought to our attention and became our case study. Throughout the following year we developed a rational and framework for the study and management of the Huron Park Area. With the growing attention and interest in conservation, along with the impending need for outdoor education centers, Huron Park was an ideal location to apply our ideas.

Some of the Projects that have been proposed and/or undertaken are as follows:

Literature search and review of ecological topics and issues

Construction of conceptual framework

Historical background studies

Natural community relation survey

Hydrological overview a wetland community synthesis

Over all aquatic study (stream and pond)

Data base (including GIS info)
